I hope you will enjoy and learn from my story about the beginnings of the Trans Canada Trail (now The Great Trail) and its Foundation. Just as the Trail has a present and a future, it also has a past, a past that includes, among other things, the circumstances under which the project began. To really dive deep into this past, I took the opportunity to write my story down, using my own resources and independent from any association. By doing so, I didn’t have to arrange to meet with anyone to get my words out. Writing a book gave me the opportunity to explain this part of the Trail’s history more thoroughly, and to provide a narrative of events rather than just an argument or a series of points or discrete anecdotes. I hope that the narrative element of the book has made the story of the Foundation in its early years more human and relatable. A book is also spacious enough to contain numerous supporting documents and to give them some context, all of which has helped me to support and flesh out the content.
Given that the Trans Canada Trail / The Great Trail will also be part of the celebrations of the 150th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada in 2017, there will be many advertisements for the Trail on television, in magazines, in newspapers, etc. I wanted to make sure that I could watch the advertisements or any other programs related to the Trail with my heart at peace. For this reason as well as my general desire to have the story of the Trail’s early years be told, I felt that I could not remain silent; the story pestered me to be told, and my best tool has been to write it down, since this has given me the chance to mull, reflect, compose, and recompose until I got it right.
